Fortson 4-H Environmental Educator

Do you like working outside and have an interest in teaching children? Fortson 4-H Center is located 30 miles outside of Atlanta on 77 acres of forest, field, pond, and wetlands; a wonderful, intimate setting for teaching kids about the environment! Fortson is in their 4th season as an environmental education facility. We are looking for enthusiastic people to teach science and outdoor education to elementary and middle school students.

Job description: Educators are responsible for leading 2-hour outdoor and environmental education based classes to grades K-8. You will be required to work some nights and weekends. Some travel to teach at other sites may be required. Other duties include animal husbandry, curriculum development, assisting with facilities and grounds maintenance, basic janitorial needs, and other duties as assigned.

Class subjects offered include: Pond ecology, forest ecology, herpetology, entomology, pioneer life, challenge course, wilderness survival and archery.

Qualifications: Commitment, genuine interest in working with children, creativity, well developed communication skills, leadership ability; a Bachelor’s degree is required in Education, Natural Science, Environmental Education, Biology, Forestry, Outdoor Education, or related fields preferred. Must be comfortable working in all weather conditions.

Dates: We are currently hiring for the 2010-2011 school year. The fall season runs from late August to early December and the spring season runs from mid-February through the middle of May. We prefer our instructors to work both seasons.

Salary: $8.95/hour, a pay increase may be available for those who can prove 1,200 hours of previous environmental education/teaching experience. Housing is also available for $40 a week (it is not required to live on site for the job but it is strongly suggested). A limited medical insurance policy is also included.

*Seasonal Staff can visit and stay overnight for free at the 4 other Georgia 4-H Centers. Rock Eagle 4-H Center is located east of Atlanta.  Wahsega 4-H Center is located in the North Georgia Mountains. Burton 4-H Center is on the Atlantic Coast near Savannah on Tybee Island. Jekyll Island is also on the Atlantic Coast near Brunswick, GA.  There may also be an opportunity to teach at one of the other centers when needed.
